A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who allegedly tried to take the officer’s gun Saturday night in Cudahy, authorities said.

Deputies responded at about 10 p.m. to a report of a brewing fight “at which a man was seen with a gun” in the 4400 block of Elizabeth Street, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies learned that the “suspect may have fled the location” in a car, and a deputy pulled over a vehicle matching the description on Walnut Street, according to the sheriff’s department.

The man “exited the vehicle and advanced on the deputy, ignoring the deputy’s commands to stop. The suspect attempted to take the deputy’s duty firearm at which time the deputy feared for his life and fired one round, striking the suspect in the upper torso,” according to the sheriff’s department.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. A gun was found inside the car and a female driver was questioned and released, sheriff’s officials said.
