Sheriff’s detectives are investigating a deputy’s shooting on Saturday of a South Gate resident who was riding a bike.

The shooting occurred in the 9600 block of Atlantic Avenue.

As described by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, “a deputy made contact with a ‘suspicious person’ riding a bicycle.”

A physical confrontation ensued, according to the department. “The deputy, believing that the suspect was armed with a handgun, fired one round from his duty-weapon,” according to the department.

Chalino Sanchez was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Later, he was booked on two misdemeanor warrants and released.

A department spokesman was unable to confirm Sunday whether a gun was found. Nor could he say what made the deputy suspicious of Sanchez.

There were no reported incidents Sunday involving cyclists participating in CicLAvia, a community event for which major streets were closed between downtown Los Angeles and the beach.

A bomb squad was summoned more than once to investigate unattended belongings along the CicLAvia route, but nothing untoward was found, L.A. Police Officer Cleon Joseph said.
