Dog escapes from kennel at LAX, bolts across runways

A dog chewed his way out of its cargo kennel at Los Angeles International Airport, ran across two runways and briefly delayed two flights before it was captured, an LAX spokeswoman said late Tuesday.

Airport personnel were notified shortly before 7:30 p.m. that the large brown boxer had escaped from its kennel while it was being loaded on a flight to Paris, LAX spokeswoman Nancy Castles said.

The dog had chewed its way through the kennel door and bolted across two north runways, Castles said. About an hour after the incident began, the dog was captured by airport personnel in a ditch that runs parallel to LAX’s north perimeter fence, she said.

Castles said that neither the dog nor airport employees were injured. The incident briefly delayed an arriving flight and a departing flight, she said.

The dog’s owner had left on a flight earlier Tuesday and was probably unaware that his pet had escaped, she said.
