The California Highway Patrol is searching for a man who fled the scene of a traffic accident in San Diego, leaving behind an injured 4-year-old boy.

Angelo Fabiani Arroyo, 40, is believed to have been the driver of a 2004 Nissan Titan that was pulling a small watercraft trailer Sunday night southbound on Interstate 5 near Rosecrans when it drifted to the right and struck a metal guardrail.

The Titan then struck a tree and came to rest on its side on top of a concrete retaining wall. The driver got out of the Titan and tried to remove the boy from the vehicle, the CHP said.

After the driver unbuckled the boy’s safety belt, the child fell 10 feet to the ground, the CHP said. The driver then fled on foot. The boy was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital, where he was in critical condition.

The boy is thought to be Arroyo’s son, the CHP said. Anyone with information about Arroyo is asked to call the CHP at (619) 220-5492.
