Officials have identified a man who died this week after first-responders pulled him from Newport Harbor late at night.

Donald Griffin, 49, died at Hoag Hospital at 12:40 a.m. Monday, according to the Orange County coroner’s office. The coroner’s office did not release his city of residence.

The cause of death was listed as saltwater drowning, according to Times Community News.

Earlier this week, police said Griffin appeared to be in full cardiac arrest when lifeguards and firefighters found him in the water off the 500 block of Via Lido Soud in Newport Beach.

Authorities said rescuers responded to the area after residents on Lido Isle called police about 11:45 p.m. Sunday to report hearing cries for help.

Griffin was found about half an hour later and taken to Hoag, police said.
