‘Radioactive box’ found near Duarte, hazmat team investigating

Share

A “radioactive box” has prompted authorities to cordon off an area near the Rancho Duarte golf course Thursday afternoon after a single-car accident.

Officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department had few details about the box or how it was determined to be radioactive.

The discovery was made after a sedan struck a telephone pole in Duarte around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Las Lomas Road and East Huntington Drive. The driver was taken to a hospital, where his condition was not immediately available.

As a precaution, investigating officials cordoned off a 300-foot area around the vehicle and closed some nearby businesses.

A hazardous material team has also been dispatched to the area.
