Two women seriously injured by hit-and-run driver in Glendale

Two women crossing a Glendale intersection were struck and seriously injured Thursday evening by a hit-and-run driver, police said.

One woman, 73, is hospitalized in grave condition, said Sgt. Tom Lorenz, spokesman for the Glendale Police Department. The second woman, 59, is being treated for serious injuries. The women’s names have not been released, he said.

According to Lorenz, the car, described as a four-door white or gray compact, ran a red light while heading east on West California Avenue and struck both pedestrians as they tried to cross West California Avenue where it intersects with Central Avenue.

Lorenz said the women were in a crosswalk and had the green light.

The intersection, about three blocks north of the Americana mall, is not a dangerous one, Lorenz said. The area has brand-new streetlights and the roads had recently resurfaced, he said.
