Experienced backcountry hikers needed in search for German tourist

An effort is underway to find “experienced backcountry hikers” to help search for a German tourist who went missing Oct. 1 in Lake Arrowhead.

Alois Krost, a 62-year-old professor, somehow became separated from the group he was with while on the Pinnacle Trail in north Lake Arrowhead, authorities said.

“We are urgently looking for experienced backcountry hikers to help with a missing person search in the San Bernardino Mountains, specifically on their back side in about [a] 10-square-mile area facing the Mojave desert,” Stacia Keller, who is helping organize the search, wrote in an email.

Krost was described as an experienced hiker and hunter and was last seen by his party about 5:45 p.m. He was wearing a light blue long-sleeve shirt, dark blue jeans and lightweight hiking shoes. He had no other equipment, authorities said.

So far, “all previous rescue operations” have been unsuccessful, Keller added. “For this reason, a further search has been initiated for this upcoming weekend.”
