Fatal crash briefly closes southbound 101 Freeway in Cahuenga Pass

A fatal crash on the 101 Freeway temporarily closed all southbound lanes through the Cahuenga Pass on Thursday morning after a Bell Canyon man rear-ended a big rig, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 3 a.m. north of Vineland Avenue in the southbound freeway’s slow lanes, said California Highway Patrol Officer Leland Tang. A 70-year-old man changed lanes and rear-ended a big rig, which wedged his 2004 Lexus underneath the truck, killing him.

There were no skid marks at the scene of the crash, Tang said.

“It’s kind of a big puzzle,” he said.

The southbound lanes into the Cahuenga Pass — one of the city’s two major thoroughfares to the San Fernando Valley — was expected to be fully reopened around 6:30 a.m., officials said.
