One man killed, one injured in Compton shooting

Late-morning shooting in Compton leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

A shooting Wednesday in Compton left one man dead, another man injured and a third unharmed, authorities said.

About 11:45 a.m. in the 900 block of West Poplar Street, a group came upon the three men, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Grace Medrano said.

A man in the group brandished a gun and fired at the three men. The group fled the scene in a vehicle, Medrano said. Investigators don't have a description of the vehicle and did not know in what direction the assailants fled.

One man was shot in the upper torso. He was found in a nearby backyard, where he was pronounced dead.

A second man was wounded in the lower torso and was taken to the hospital, Medrano said. He’s in fair condition and is expected to survive.

In the last 12 months, there have been 17 homicides within a one-mile radius of Wednesday's shooting, according to The Times' Homicide Report database.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department’s homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.
