Man is fatally shot in Santa Fe Springs

Police are trying to identify the man who fatally shot another man Wednesday night in Santa Fe Springs, authorities said.

Shortly before 7 p.m., a man in his early 20s walking near Painter Avenue and Barton Circle was shot numerous times, Whittier police Lt. Bryan Ellis said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and his name was not released pending notification of his family.

Witnesses told police that before the shooting, the gunman pulled up to the victim in a silver compact vehicle, got out and the two fought, Ellis said.

During the altercation, the assailant brandished a gun and fired several times, Ellis said. The shooter then drove off.

There have been no homicides during the last 12 months within a one-mile radius of Wednesday’s shooting, according to the Homicide Report, The Times’ online database.
