Firefighters rescue hikers as they battle blaze in Glendale
Three hikers were rescued Sunday from a canyon near Glendale where a brush fire has burned 25 acres, officials said.
Fire crews are working to rescue two additional hikers who are still in the canyon but in a safe location, said Glendale Fire Department Battalion Chief Bill Lynch. The hikers were expected to be airlifted out and were keeping in touch with fire crews by cell phone.
No structures were threatened.
The fire started about 12:30 p.m. in the hills above Brand Park, Lynch said.
Assisted by four water-dropping helicopters, more than 100 firefighters from Glendale, and Los Angeles city and county fire departments were battling the blaze.
It is unclear how the fire started. There are no homes near the fire’s origin, only hiking trails and fire roads.
