Police were searching Thursday for the driver of a black SUV that lost control and flew off the 110 Freeway, crashing into a Pico-Union family’s backyard.

“I was in the living room doing my homework and all of the sudden, my dad comes in and says to go with him outside,” Camilla Argueta, a member of the family living in the home, told KNBC-TV Wednesday. “It was complete destruction.”

The SUV went off the freeway near West 17th and Toberman streets about 9:18 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

Video of the cleanup effort showed the vehicle was covered in tree branches and splintered wood from a backyard shed.

“I guess the car came off the road, hit our fence, went through our gym and somehow ended up against our shed,” Elizabeth Argueta told KNBC. “Our shed is completely gone. Everything inside the gym, a treadmill, bicycle, bookcases, TV is destroyed.”

The driver ran off after the crash, the CHP said, but officers on the scene reported finding blood and other evidence in the vehicle indicating that the driver had been injured.

Officers were checking hospitals to see if the driver was being treated, the CHP said.
