Fuel spill cleanup continues on Pacific Coast Highway in Wilmington

Cleanup of a fuel spill along a gritty stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Wilmington continued Tuesday, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters were called about 9:45 a.m. to the site of a fuel spill at a business at 2200 E. Pacific Coast Highway in Wilmington.

Few details were available shortly after the spill but KABC News reported the incident involved 500 gallons of jet fuel leaking from a 150,000-barrel tank.

By early afternoon, officials said a private cleanup firm and the refinery staff were transferring fuel from the leaking container and mopping up the spillage.

The Los Angeles Fire Department remained on standby as the process continued, but officials said there was no public health threat and no vapor or plume.

Officials initially said the spill occurred in Harbor City, but it was in Wilmington.
