Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man suspected of shooting a woman in East L.A. early Tuesday, officials said.

The man was shot about 4:15 a.m. after facing off with deputies in the 100 block of North Gage Avenue, said Deputy Crystal Hernandez.

“He was out in the open with a weapon in his hand,” she said.

The incident began about 2:40 a.m. when deputies responded to a report of a shooting.

Television news footage showed the man -- who was not immediately identified -- standing outside near an SUV with a gun in one hand and a cellphone in the other. A short time after the man went inside a home, a sheriff’s department SWAT team moved in and gunshots rang out, KTLA reported. The gunman was taken into custody and later pronounced dead.
