Happy Camp fire: Crews battle 50-acre blaze near Moorpark

Share

A brush fire near Moorpark spread to at least 50 acres early Tuesday, although no structures were threatened and no injuries had been reported.

Dubbed the Happy Camp fire, the blaze broke out just before 2 a.m. and was burning near Happy Camp Canyon Road and east of the Rustic Canyon Golf Course north of the 118Freeway, said Bill Nash of the Ventura County Fire Department.

No evacuations or full road closures had been ordered as firefighters tried to get the upper hand on the blaze’s western front in the predawn hours.

“Right now, even though we’ve had a little bit of rain over the last couple of weeks, the brush is still extremely dry,” Nash said.

Frigid temperatures, however, were helping fire crews.

“What we don’t have is the heat component, and that’s an aid to us,” Nash said.

He said helicopters would be deployed for water drops at first light.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
