Containment of Hathaway fire near Banning expected June 25
Firefighters continued to make progress against a wildfire burning north of Banning, the U.S. Forest Service said Tuesday.
The Hathaway Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest, which has consumed about 3,800 acres, was 78% encircled, with full containment anticipated on June 25, the Forest Service said.
The blaze began June 9 on the northern portion of the Morongo Indian Reservation and burned north into the San Gorgonio Wilderness. The cause is under investigation, authorities said.
The steep, rugged terrain contains many trees that died during the drought and bark beetle infestation in the early 2000s.
Nine firefighters have been injured battling the blaze, which include personnel from the Forest Service, Cal Fire Riverside unit, state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, Bureau of Indian Affairs and Riverside County Fire Department.
