An East L.A. high school volleyball coach accused of having sex with one 15-year-old student and “inappropriately” touching another was charged Tuesday with multiple sex-related counts, prosecutors said.

Jonathan Roldan, 23, was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon on nine felony counts related to his first alleged victim, prosecutors said -- three counts each of unlawful sexual penetration, oral copulation of a person under the age of 16 and sexual penetration by a foreign object.

He was also charged with three misdemeanor counts of child molestation involving the second alleged victim. If convicted of the charges, he faces up to 10 years in state prison.

Prosecutors allege Roldan, a junior varsity volleyball coach at Esteban E. Torres High School, began a sexual relationship with one student in September while “dating” the second student. He was arrested at his East Los Angeles home Friday evening, the same day one of the students reported his alleged acts to school officials.

After Roldan’s arrest was announced by authorities Monday, the L.A. Unified School District said in a statement that Roldan would be placed on unpaid leave once he was formally charged.

An LAUSD spokeswoman said Tuesday that the district’s human resources department was in close contact with the court and would begin the process of placing Roldan on leave once it received notification.

If Roldan is convicted of the charges, the district noted Monday, he will be fired.

“The district takes these charges very seriously,” the statement said. “Every precaution is taken throughout L.A. Unified to ensure the safety of students and staff.”

An investigation into the alleged incidents is ongoing. Anyone with information about the alleged incidents or other potential victims may contact detectives at (877) 710-5273 or provide information anonymously at (800) 222-8477.
