A little girl and her grandmother were in critical condition Friday and three of their relatives suffered minor injuries after a car hit all five of them outside an elementary school in Highland Park, officials said.

Preliminary reports indicate the victims are family members and the children were between 7 and 12 years old, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott. The grandmother is 52 and the children’s mother who was hit is 32 years old, KABC-TV reported.

A car drove through the intersection of Avenue 57 and Meridian Street outside Yorkdale Elementary School about 8:12 a.m. and hit the five, police said. The driver was uninjured in the crash, fire officials said.

Authorities told KABC the 87-year-old driver ran a stop sign, then hit the family.

Video from KTLA-TV showed firefighters loading victims onto stretchers before whisking them away to area hospitals.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, officials said. It was not immediately clear if the driver had been arrested or if drugs or alcohol were involved.
