Two people taking pictures of transients holding offensive signs while begging for money in Hollywood were attacked Tuesday night, leading to the fatal stabbing of a woman, Los Angeles police said.

The attack occurred shortly after 8 p.m. at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, in the heart of Hollywood, where attractions like Grauman’s Chinese Theatre draw in tens of thousands of tourists annually.

The pair, who are believed to be from the Los Angeles area, began taking pictures with their cellphones after spotting the transients holding signs with obscenities on them while asking for money, according to sources familiar with the case who asked not to be identified because the investigation is ongoing.

The man and woman were simultaneously attacked by the three men, who were not immediately identified. The trio, believed to be between 27 and 34 years old, were booked Wednesday on suspicion of murder.

Police did not immediately identify the victim because her family had not yet been notified. Authorities said she was stabbed at least once in the body and was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center several hours later.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact West Bureau Homicide at (213) 382-9470.
