Remains of man suspected of killing wife, kids are found on riverbank

The skeletal remains of a man suspected of killing his wife and two daughters last year have been discovered in a Northern California river bank.

Dental records confirmed the remains were that of 46-year-old Shane Franklin Miller, who had been the subject of a massive manhunt in 2013 after his wife, Sandy, and daughters, Shasta, 5, and Shelby, 8, were found shot to death in their Shingletown house, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities received an anonymous tip at 11 p.m. Friday about the remains, which were found in the Mattole River in Petrolia in Humboldt County. The area is where Miller was believed to have fled from authorities.

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko told KRCR-TV that residents in Shingletown had lived with anxiety not knowing whether Miller was still at large.

Sandy Miller had sought help from a shelter weeks before she was killed and had apparently considered leaving him because he had abused her, according to the TV station. But she decided to return home.

Miller disappeared, along with his dog and truck, after his family’s bodies were discovered, according to CNN. He was believed to be hiding in the forest.

The deaths were featured on CNN’s “The Hunt.”
