Hundreds expected to celebrate Mother’s Day at skid row mission
Hundreds of homeless and impoverished mothers are expected to spend Mother’s Day weekend at the Fred Jordan Missions in downtown Los Angeles, where volunteers are offering free manicures, makeup, roses and a lunch for their children.
The actitivies, in their 69th year, are meant to help restore dignity and self-confidence in these mothers, mission workers said. Volunteers spent hours this week making gift baskets and preparing the lunch.
Women and children make up more than 40% of the homeless population nationwide, according to the mission. “Unfortunately, many homeless mothers have more thorns in theirs lives than roses,” missions President Willie L. Jordan said in a statement.
Volunteers and members of the community are welcome. Activities will take place Saturday at the Fred Jordan Missions at 5th and Towne streets in downtown Los Angeles from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
