Mother, boyfriend arrested after baby dies at Inglewood hospital

A woman and her boyfriend were arrested Monday after her 14-month old son died at a hospital in Inglewood.

Sandra Cartegena, 42, was arrested by Hawthorne police Monday on suspicion of child endangerment. Her boyfriend, 44-year-old Julio Mejia, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The two were arrested after the baby died at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. The boy, whose name was not released, had been taken to the hospital hours earlier, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said.

An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

Cartegena and Mejia were being held at Hawthorne city jail Monday. Cartegena's 9-year-old and 14-year-old sons were taken into temporary custody by the county’s Department of Children and Family Services.

The investigation into the boy's death remained ongoing.
