Northbound Interstate 5 in Gorman reopens after big rig crash

Authorities have begun to reopen northbound Interstate 5 in Gorman after three big rigs collided, shutting down the highway during the Tuesday morning rush hour.

Two northbound lanes were reopened about 9:30 a.m. at Highway 138, said California Highway Patrol Officer Scott Jobinger.

All northbound lanes had been closed at Highway 138 for several hours after the collision, which sent metal beams across the highway and seriously injured one driver.

The highway is the main artery from Southern California to the San Joaquin Valley.

CHP logs show one of the big rigs jackknifed and another big rig crashed into it about 1:30 a.m. Metal beams from one of the trucks slammed through the cab of another. One driver was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, Jobinger said.

The crash remained under investigation.
