Investigators in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties are searching Thursday for a woman who, using sleight of hand, was able to steal $150,000 worth of loose diamonds from one store and a 5.7-carat diamond ring from another, authorities said.

The woman, who is believed to be between 50 and 55 years old, was described as about 5-foot-8 and weighing about 150 pounds, with short black hair and glasses, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said that on Dec. 6, the woman walked into Ozel’s Jewelry in Victorville and showed an interest in purchasing high-quality diamonds. She did purchase one diamond for $800, but she refused to offer any personal information for the receipt.

After she paid the $800, she told store employees she needed to meet with her husband and left in a Toyota Sienna minivan. The woman made off with a paper bindle of diamonds, known as a parcel.

Then, on Dec. 10, the same suspect went to Giantto’s Jewelry in Tarzana, buying a watch and ring for $800 cash. She also stole the diamond ring and left without giving any information, using the same excuse as before.

Authorities have asked that anyone with information contact Det. Don Campas in Victorville at (760) 241-2911 or Det. Luie Velasquez of the Los Angeles Police Department at (818) 374-7762. Tips can also be submitted through a hotline at (800) 782-7463.
