Jurupa Valley fire destroys homes, prompts evacuation
Firefighters in Riverside County fought a two-acre blaze Tuesday that destroyed homes and prompted the evacuation of a neighborhood, including an elementary school.
Fire officials said the fire in Jurupa Valley burned through four homes, 11 outbuildings and three motorhomes. Forty vehicles were also destroyed, although most of them were under repair or salvaged. Multiple power lines were also reported down.
The fire — which was reported shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday — was 85% contained shortly after 4 p.m., officials said. More than 100 firefighters and 24 engine companies are on the scene.
A square-mile area — which appears to be mostly residential — was placed under mandatory evacuation orders. The students at West Riverside Elementary were also taken to a nearby middle school campus.
Officers from Riverside County Animal Services helped evacuate 14 pets from the area, including the animals at one home that had been destroyed. Among them were also a Shar Pei and her litter of five puppies. Four dogs have already been returned to their owners. The other animals were taken to an animal shelter in the city.
No injuries have been reported.
