L.A. mayor's race: Stakes high for USC/Times debate Sunday

A round-table discussion of the mayoral campaign by Times political reporters Maeve Reston, Seema Mehta and James Rainey as candidates Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel near their May 21 runoff election.

Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel will square off at 5:30 p.m. Sunday for a mayor's race debate that will be live-streamed on and broadcast on our sister TV station, KTLA-TV Channel 5.

Times reporters discuss the high stakes for the debate in the video above.

Will the candidates ramp up the accusations and counter-accusations we saw last week over who approved those Department of Water and Power salary rates?

Or will they explain in more detail how they would create jobs, boost revenue, avoid raising taxes and keep services like street-paving and tree-trimming from sagging?

Co-sponsored by The Times and USC’s Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, the session will be conducted at USC’s Galen Center. Community sponsors are the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the Junior State of America.

Unruh director Dan Schnur will moderate along with Times opinion columnist and veteran City Hall reporter Jim Newton.
