The ring was displayed, along with other sports memorabilia, at Trophy's Restaurant in the Mission Valley neighborhood of San Diego. It was reported stolen in 1988 and listed by police as a commercial burglary.
Two weeks ago Alworth received a phone call from an unknown person offering to return the ring to him for $40,000. The Encinitas station of the sheriff's department began an investigation and located the ring at an auction house in Laguna Niguel.
The auction was set for Nov. 20, with opening bid on the ring at $44,000, the sheriff's department said.
The ring has now been returned to Alworth. There have been no arrests and the investigation has been turned over to the district attorney's office for review.
