Lance Alworth’s stolen Super Bowl ring returned 25 years later
A stolen Super Bowl ring belonging to NFL Hall of Famer Lance Alworth has been recovered after 25 years, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.
The ring is from Super Bowl VI in which the Dallas Cowboys beat the Miami Dolphins, 24-3, in New Orleans in 1972. Alworth caught a touchdown pass.
Alworth, now 73, spent most of his career with the San Diego Chargers but the final two seasons with the Cowboys.
The ring was displayed, along with other sports memorabilia, at Trophy’s Restaurant in the Mission Valley neighborhood of San Diego. It was reported stolen in 1988 and listed by police as a commercial burglary.
Two weeks ago Alworth received a phone call from an unknown person offering to return the ring to him for $40,000. The Encinitas station of the sheriff’s department began an investigation and located the ring at an auction house in Laguna Niguel.
The auction was set for Nov. 20, with opening bid on the ring at $44,000, the sheriff’s department said.
The ring has now been returned to Alworth. There have been no arrests and the investigation has been turned over to the district attorney’s office for review.
