Lawndale High student held on suspicion of making Twitter threats
A 17-year-old Lawndale High School student was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of using Twitter to threaten that she was going to shoot students, authorities said.
Authorities were notified of the alleged threat early Wednesday by a “concerned person,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. By 6:30 a.m., investigators identified the teen who they say made the threats and took her into custody.
The student, whose identity was not released because she is a minor, was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.
Extra deputies were sent to Lawndale High School as a precaution.
On Wednesday afternoon, investigators were outside the girl’s home as they prepared to serve a search warrant to look for any possible weapons or other evidence. No weapons were found, authorities told KTLA-TV Channel 5.
Centinela Valley Union High School District Superintendent Jose Fernandez said the district considers such incidents a serious threat, especially given recent school shootings elsewhere in the country.
“It’s really a tragedy,” Fernandez told KTLA. “We had no indication there was any particular danger with this student.”
