LAX shooting: Condition of wounded teacher is upgraded to ‘good’
An educator wounded Friday during the shooting at Los Angeles International Airport has been upgraded to “good” condition, hospital officials said Monday.
Brian Ludmer, a 29-year-old Calabasas High School teacher, will need at least one more surgery “for a leg fractured by a bullet wound,” as well as extensive physical therapy, according to an update from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
Ludmer was waiting for a flight Friday when he came face to face with the gunman, identified by police as 23-year-old Paul Anthony Ciancia. He turned to run when the gunman took aim, but was struck by a bullet.
The high school’s theater director, Ludmer was somehow able to drag himself into a closet and hid there until the violence passed.
UCLA Medical Center officials said Monday that they issued an update on Ludmer’s condition at the request of him and his family.
“At this time, the family wishes to decline any interviews with the news media, and requests that their privacy be respected,” according to the statement.
Ludmer was one of three victims from the LAX shooting taken to UCLA Medical Center, according to the statement. One of the other two was treated and released on Friday. Ciancia remained in critical condition after having been shot by LAX police in the leg and head. Officials said he was heavily sedated and under 24-hour guard.
