Major artery to LAX closed when smoke erupts from underground electrical vault
A major traffic artery to Los Angeles International Airport was abruptly shut down Tuesday afternoon after smoke was seen seeping out of a manhole and its cover had popped off, authorities said.
The smoke was reported about 11:30 a.m. on Sepulveda Boulevard south of La Tijera Boulevard, a major intersection for people headed to and from LAX, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
An underground electrical vault issue led to the smoke and a power outage, but neither the LAFD or Department of Water and Power had details.
La Tijera Boulevard was shut down between Sepulveda Way and Sepulveda Boulevard indefinitely until the issue is resolved, the LAFD said. Drivers headed to LAX should find alternate routes around Sepulveda.
