Long Beach police traffic stop leads to deadly rooftop shooting
A police traffic stop in Long Beach turned deadly Tuesday morning when the driver bailed from the car and ran off, ultimately ending when he was fatally shot by officers on a rooftop.
The suspect died at the scene, KABC-TV reported.
The incident began about 2:30 a.m., when police tried to pull over a car near Third Street and Walnut Avenue, KABC-TV reported. The driver of the car leapt out and ran off, leaving two passengers inside the vehicle.
The two people who stayed behind identified the driver for the officers, KABC reported. A background check revealed the driver was wanted on a warrant and was considered armed and dangerous.
About 90 minutes later, the man was spotted on the roof of an apartment building near Fourth Street and Nebraska Avenue, a block away from where the chase first began.
After spotting the man, officers shot him, according to media reports. It was not immediately clear whether the man had a gun and also fired at officers.
There were no reports of officers being injured. The surrounding streets remained closed to traffic Tuesday morning as police continued to comb the neighborhood looking for evidence the man may have tossed away during the chase.
