Worker killed at 49ers stadium construction site in Santa Clara

A driver for a steel company was killed Monday morning when the rebar he was delivering for the San Francisco 49ers’ new stadium fell on him, marking the second construction-related death at the site this year.

The incident occurred about 7 a.m. at the team’s new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Cal/OSHA spokeswoman Kathleen Hennessy said. The worker was a 61-year-old man from Vacaville, she said. The man’s name was not immediately available and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner was unavailable Monday.

Cal/OSHA investigators were at the job site Monday morning investigating, Hennessy said. Construction at the site was shut down for the rest of the day, the San Jose Mercury News reported. The man was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver worked for Gerdau Ameristeel, a subcontractor on the project, Hennessy said.

It’s the second death at the Levi’s Stadium job site this year, she said. In June, a worker on a ladder in an elevator shaft was killed when an elevator counterweight landed on him. The man knew the elevator was on and didn’t move out of the way, Hennessy said. There were no witnesses.

“It’s sort of a mystery,” she said. There were no citations issued from that incident, Hennessy said.

The $1.2 billion stadium is expected to be completed next year.
