Man shot in Long Beach’s first homicide of 2014

A man who was shot in the Cambodia Town area Monday night in Long Beach became the city’s first homicide, authorities said.

The fatal shooting was reported around 9:55 p.m. in the 1100 block of New York Street, not far from Polytechnic High School, Long Beach Police said.

The gunshot victim, whose name was not released, was taken by fire paramedics to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Nancy Pratt, a spokeswoman for the department, said it was the first homicide reported for the city this year.

There were about 40 homicides reported in Long Beach in 2013, according to the Homicide Report.

The shooting remains under investigation.
