Authorities said a Long Beach resident fatally shot a man early Sunday who was allegedly trying to burglarize his home.

Police responded to a 911 call of a burglary in progress about 3 a.m. in the 2800 block of East 3rd Street. The caller said the suspected burglar was shot inside the house, said Sgt. Megan Zabel, a spokeswoman with the Long Beach Police Department.

Paramedics declared the man dead at the scene, Zabel said. His name and age are being withheld pending family notification.

Homicide investigators have spoken to the two adult residents of the home, Zabel said.

“There’s no indication of intent on the part of the residents,” Zabel said.

Long Beach police have not released any information about the residents, the gun used or whether the firearm was legally purchased.

In July, a Long Beach resident shot a woman, Andrea Miller, who broke into his home with a man. Miller’s accomplice, Gus Adams, was charged with murder in connection with her death.

According the Homicide Report, a Los Angeles Times database of homicides in L.A. County, there were two other slayings in the last 12 months within a mile of Sunday’s incident.
