L.A. County supervisors back 2024 summer Olympics bid
County supervisors hope to bring the 2024 Olympics to Los Angeles County, unanimously voting Tuesday to urge the United States’ Olympic Committee to hold the summer games here and directing county officials to cooperate with a Southern California committee that is bidding to host the competition.
“Los Angeles is home to more Olympians than anywhere in the world, and has twice hosted the summer Olympic games,” read the proposal written by board Chairman Mark Ridley-Thomas.
“The traditional reverence for sport among Los Angelenos, combined with their vast creative infrastructure, make Los Angeles uniquely capable as an Olympic host,” the proposal says. “Los Angeles can draw deeply on its past and present strengths to stage the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024 in a way that both respects tradition and the Olympic Charter and introduces new and exciting approaches to this great worldwide celebration.”
The United States has not hosted a summer games since Atlanta in 1996.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee reached out to 35 cities about their interest in hosting the 2024 competition. Los Angeles’ City Council has already weighed in in favor of the effort. Other cities where political and civic leaders have made moves to host the games include Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington.
The Southern California committee, if it decides to bid for the games, must submit an application for a city in 2015, with a decision by the International Olympic Committee expected in 2017.
