Driver who allegedly hit woman, 5 kids in Long Beach faces DUI charge

The driver of a vehicle that allegedly struck a woman and five children in Long Beach on Thursday night was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Long Beach police identified the driver of the vehicle as John Untershine, 59, who remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The collision occurred just after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Anaheim Street and Gundry Avenue in the Cambodia Town area, according to Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin.

Authorities said the woman and children were crossing the street when the vehicle struck them.

The victims, who appeared to be related, suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for evaluation, Heflin said, adding that the children’s ages range from 4 to 12.

Long Beach Police Sgt. Megan Zabel said the woman is the mother of two of the children. The parents of the other children were notified of the accident.

The current condition of the victims was not immediately available.
