A man who waded into the ocean off Will Rogers State Beach on Friday was eventually apprehended after Los Angeles police officers also got into the water and pulled him to shore with the help of lifeguards.

The man, who was not immediately identified, had been spotted in Pacific Palisades trying to break into cars before running down the rocks and into the ocean to avoid arrest.

Witnesses reported seeing the man about 8:30 a.m. trying to get into cars near the beach in the 1000 block of Pacific Coast Highway, said LAPD Officer Christopher No.

When officers arrived, the man ran down the rocks and was shown on live television wading waist-deep in the ocean. About a half dozen officers were seen standing above on the side of the street watching him while slowly spreading out to block any attempt to escape.

Lifeguards and several fully clothed police officers went into the water to pull him to shore a few minutes later.

The man, who witnesses said appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, appeared to be combative with police and lifeguards throughout the ordeal.
