May Day marches to clog traffic in and around downtown L.A.
Thousands gathered in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday for May Day rallies to support immigration reform and workers’ rights.
Stretches of busy streets in Chinatown and downtown Los Angeles will be closed for most of Thursday morning and afternoon as advocates for immigration reform march across the area for the annual May Day demonstrations.
“Unless you need to be downtown, avoid the area because the traffic is going to be bad,” Police Chief Charlie Beck said on KTLA.
Broadway between Olympic Boulevard and 3rd Street will be full of demonstrators from about 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Marches will begin at noon and 3 p.m. on Broadway and march north to 3rd Street downtown.
A third march will begin in Chinatown at 11 a.m. The march will begin at Cesar Chavez Avenue on Broadway and turn left onto Aliso Street before ending on Alameda Street between Aliso and Temple streets. That march is scheduled to end about 1:30 p.m.
The city Department of Transportation posted a map of the planned street closures and closed intersections for the day.
The marches are a conglomerate of immigration and human rights groups calling for action.
