Friends, family remember 3 girls killed in Halloween hit-and-run

About 100 people gathered Sunday evening at a curbside memorial in Santa Ana to remember three 13-year-old girls killed in a hit-and-run accident on Halloween night.

Twin sisters Lexia and Lexandra Perez, and their friend, Andrea Gonzalez, were struck Friday by a driver in an SUV as they crossed the road at Old Grand Street and Fairhaven Avenue. They were preparing to go trick-or-treating, family members said. All three girls were pronounced dead at the scene.

Late Sunday, police had blocked off the intersection, where a small memorial overrun with balloons and flowers marked the spot where the girls died. Mourners laid flowers, lit candles and held hands as those who knew the girls well offered remembrances.

Salha Zeidan, Lexandra’s math teacher at Portola Middle School in Orange, played back memories of better times.

“Lexandra was very quiet, very smart and generous,” Zeidan said. “She was also a very hardworking student.”

Zeidan wiped away tears and turned her gaze skyward. Tomorrow was Monday, a school day, but Lexandra wouldn’t be there.

“I don’t know exactly how to deal with her empty desk when class starts tomorrow at 9:05 a.m.,” Zeidan added. “My plan right now is to hug each student who comes through the door. No high-fives. Hugs.”

Maria Gonzalez, Andrea’s mother, arrived later, and the crowd parted to allow her through. Someone handed her a lit candle, and Gonzalez took it, her hands trembling.

A church leader offered a sermon in Spanish.

“There are no words to describe what happened here,” he began, as volunteers moved through the crowd with small, slotted boxes wrapped in pink paper to collect donations.

Santa Ana police arrested several suspects Sunday morning in connection with the crash. Investigators declined to release any further information about the arrests, and as of late Sunday afternoon the families of the victims had not yet been notified.

Andrea’s brother, Josafat Gonzalez, 21, said of the arrests, “It won’t bring my sister back, but the people who committed such a terrible crime will get their time in court and justice will be served.”
