Los Angeles man dies a week after assault at Metro Blue Line station
A week after being severely beaten while waiting for a train on a Metro platform in South Los Angeles, a 65-year-old Los Angeles man has died of his injuries, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Saturday.
John Whitmore was waiting for a train on the Willowbrook-Rosa Parks Metro platform at 1:20 p.m. on June 13 when two women approached him, Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Kim Manatt said in a prepared statement.
The women punched and kicked Whitmore until he collapsed, Manatt said. Then the women ran.
Whitmore was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for a week. He died Friday at 2 a.m.
“Our hearts go out to the family,” Metro spokeswoman Kim Upton told The Times. No other information on the assault was immediately available, she said.
Willowbrook-Rosa Parks is one of the busiest of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s 80 stations. It is the transfer point for the Green Line, which connects Redondo Beach and Norwalk, and the Blue Line, which links downtown Long Beach to downtown Los Angeles.
