A number of San Diego city and county agencies worked together Sunday to recover the body of a 12-year-old girl who presumably drowned after falling from a boat into San Vicente Reservoir late Saturday afternoon.
Police officials said the girl was in the bow of a vessel that was towing people on a tube when those individuals fell into the water about 6 p.m. The boat slowed down and the girl went over the side and into the water in front of the boat.
Investigators suspect the vessel continued to move, possibly running her over, police Lt. Bryan Brecht said. She was wearing a life jacket, but it was later found in the water.
A search was immediately launched until night fell.
On Sunday, the driver of the boat helped crews narrow their search zone, and divers and lifeguards focused their efforts in an area of about 300 to 400 yards.
The divers, who stayed in the water 23 minutes, went down to about 120 feet, said Mónica Muñoz, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Sonar technology was also used.
San Vicente Reservoir was closed Sunday while crews worked.
