After four men who live at the location were detained for questioning, the Sheriff’s Department announced that Yao Zhomg Shi, 59, would be booked on suspicion of homicide.

It was unclear how the man died, but a Los Angeles County coroner’s official said he was beaten. An official Thursday morning said an exam was scheduled before the end of the day.

The department said the investigation is ongoing and it was unclear if anyone else would be charged in connection with the death.

The apparent homicide is only the 16th in Monterey Park since 2007, according to The Times’ Homicide Report.

The last homicide occurred Feb. 15, 2013, when 25-year-old Emmanuel Joseph Franco was killed near the intersection of South Atlantic Boulevard and Harding Avenue.
