Napa earthquake: Boy seriously hurt by falling chimney is recovering

A 13-year-old Napa boy critically injured after a brick chimney toppled onto him during Sunday’s 6.0-magnitude earthquake is out of surgery and recovering, his family said.

Nicholas Dillon’s aunt, Carmen Rosales, told FOX40 that the boy suffered multiple pelvic fractures that required extensive surgery at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. It may be months before he can stand again, she added.

Nicholas was hosting a sleepover with a friend at his family’s home in Napa, so he gave up the couch and opted to sleep on a mattress near the chimney in the living room.

When the quake -- centered about 9 miles south of Napa -- struck at 3:20 a.m., the chimney came crumbling down and fell on Nicholas as he attempted to crawl away, FOX40 reported.

“We are very grateful that it was nothing worse than what it was,” his aunt said.

Nicholas was one of more than 200 people hurt during the devastating earthquake, which damaged buildings, cut off power to tens of thousands, sparked fires and broke water mains.

Napa city officials said 208 patients, who mostly suffered orthopedic-related injuries, were treated at Queen of the Valley Hospital.

The temblor was the largest earthquake to strike the Bay Area since the 6.9 Loma Prieta quake of 1989.

U.S. Geological Survey estimated that the earthquake may have caused as much as $1 billion in damage.
