Man fatally shot in North Hollywood shortly after contact with police
A man was fatally shot near a North Hollywood elementary school early Monday morning, shortly after police say they made contact with him as he was attempting to cut down trees in a nearby park.
Los Angeles police told NBC 4 that the man appeared to be speaking nonsensically when authorities first confronted him and asked him to leave.
Then, about an hour later, around 12:45 a.m., officers responded to a citizen’s report of a gunshot and discovered that the man had been shot near the corner of Tujunga Avenue and Kittridge Street, Lt. McNeill Gardner said. The man, who was not identified, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The shooter fled on foot, Gardner said.
“We have very little suspect information,” he added.
The victim was in his late 50s or early 60s and was shot once in the chest, Sgt. Mike Cammert told KTLA.
The shooting occurred about a block away from Fair Avenue Elementary School, which TV news reports said would be in regular session Monday.
