One killed, four injured in accident on 710 Freeway
A suspected 22-year-old drunk driver triggered a multi-vehicle crash on the 710 Freeway in Long Beach early Saturday that killed one person and injured four others, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 12:50 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway, just south of the 91 Freeway overcrossing, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Jacobs.
Maria Guadalupe Vargas, who was driving a 1988 Chrysler, apparently failed to stop and crashed into a 2005 Toyota, which slammed into another vehicle that in turn hit a big-rig truck, according to a statement by the CHP.
Vargas, of Wilmington, suffered major injuries and was transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, officials said.
A unidentified 29-year-old woman from Alhambra, who was a passenger in the Toyota, died at the scene, and the driver of the vehicle suffered major injuries, authorities said. The drivers of the other two vehicles suffered less severe injuries.
Vargas was arrested and faces three felony charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence causing injury and death, Jacobs said.
In a separate incident a few hours later in the same area, a wrong-way driver caused three separate major collisions driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the 710 Freeway, Jacobs said. All lanes were blocked for about an hour and the driver was arrested.
