One man shot to death, another wounded on South L.A. street

A gunman opened fire Saturday evening on two men riding motorized bicycles on a South Los Angeles street, killing one and wounding the other, police said.

The assailant, armed with what appeared to be a revolver, approached the men in the 5400 block of South Central Avenue and began shooting for unknown reasons, said Los Angeles Police Lt. E. Imaizumi. The shooting occurred at about 6:30 p.m.

The man who survived was shot in the leg as he held up his hands, according to his brother, who was on a motorized bike a short distance behind the two victims, Imaizumi said.

“We don’t know if it was a robbery or not,” the lieutenant said. The victims, whose identities were not released, “looked like regular guys” out for a ride, he added.

Both victims were taken to a hospital, where one believed to be 35 to 40 years old was pronounced dead, Imaizumi said. He said the second victim, 28, was in surgery Saturday night.

The assailant was last seen walking north on South Central Avenue, although he possibly fled in a car, Imaizumi said.
