Man charged with attacking 91-year-old hospital roommate

A hospital patient has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly attacked a 91-year-old man who was sharing a room with him at an Orange County hospital, authorities said Friday.

Prosecutors said Ibrahim Yousef Battat, 36, tried to suffocate the 91-year-old patient and then began beating him, leaving him with a broken finger and cuts and scrapes.

They were sharing a hospital room at Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center.

During the alleged attack Wednesday, prosecutors said Battat used his hands to cover the other man’s nose and mouth and then beat him until a nurse and a patients in a neighboring room came to his aid.

Battat, a Laguna Niguel resident, is charged with one felony count of attempted murder and one felony count of elder abuse. He faces potential sentencing enhancements for premeditation and deliberation and great bodily injury to an elder.

The older patient, who was not identified, suffered a broken finger, swollen eyes and cuts and scrapes to his head and hand, authorities said

Battat is being held in lieu of $1-million bail. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years to life in state prison if convicted.
