PCH in Dana Point reopened after boulders cleared from lanes
A stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point that was closed in both directions during the Friday morning commute was reopened shortly before 10:30 a.m., authorities said.
At least two large boulders, each described as being the size of a “small VW,” fell at about 3:30 a.m. in the area between Camino Capistrano and Dana Point Harbor Drive, blocking the roadway, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Crews worked throughout the morning to remove the debris while commuters were pushed onto alternate routes, such as the 5 Freeway.
Authorities initially expected the closure to last a couple of hours, but the sheriff’s department said after 8 a.m. on its Twitter account that the highway would be closed until about noon.
Then shortly before 10:30, the agency sent out another message saying lanes in both directions were open.
It was not immediately clear what caused the rock slide or if any vehicles were damaged by the debris.
