A powerful county workers union on Thursday endorsed a former member of President Obama’s administration for a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Former Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, who is running to replace termed-out Supervisor Gloria Molina, was endorsed by SEIU Local 721, which represents 55,000 county workers. The union will support her bid financially as well as with volunteers to get out the vote in the 2014 election.

Solis said she was honored by the backing.

“I am proud of my record of standing up for working families everywhere and look forward to continuing to work together to invest in education, infrastructure and economic growth in Los Angeles County,” she said in a statement.

Molina is one of two supervisors who are leaving the board next year because of voter-approved term limits. Solis, a former state legislator and Congresswoman, has raised nearly $250,000 for the race and appears to have cleared the field of any competition to represent the 1st District.
